Blue Like Jazz & Steve Taylor

April 27th, 2012

I’m a huge fan of Steve Taylor. So when he started working on the Donald Miller movie Blue Like Jazz, I knew I had to be involved. I bought the Blue Like Jazz book, although I never read and still haven’t finished reading the book. I jumped on the Kickstarter campaign and became a supporter. I went to the movie on opening night (never done that before). I enjoyed the movie a lot. And I’ve watched as this little independent movie has received some great press.

But for me, the star of this movie was Steve Taylor…

And now, I found this promo for the movie which, in my humble opinion, is the best movie promotion I’ve every seen… because Steve Taylor is in it? Maybe. Or maybe I’m his corny humor matches mine.  Anyway… enjoy this YouTube clip of the Steve Taylor Master Class: Directing Actors on Set.

Creative Statistics

December 10th, 2010

I’m a sucker for statistics. But unfortunately explaining those statistics to non-numbers people can be a challenge.

Check out this great explanation of economic growth by Hans Rosling, Professor of International Health at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. In this spectacular section of ‘The Joy of Stats’ he tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers – in just four minutes.

Christmas Food Court Flash Mob

November 30th, 2010

A flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails.

This YouTube video isn’t pointless at all. And it sure made my day. I hope it adds a bit of holiday cheer for you this Christmas season.

Awful Sounds

September 16th, 2010

I’m not sure what made me think of this… but being a music buff, I’m very aware of sound. And there are just some sounds that drive me up the wall. So for no other reason than to make a list, here it goes:

My least favorite sounds (in no particular order)

  • Shuffling shoes … pick up your feet, man
  • Chewing with your mouth open … sound you can see… yech
  • Out of tune singers … singing flat isn’t sharp
  • Car squeaks and rattles … is my car falling apart
  • Fingernails on Styrofoam … makes me cringe just thinking about it
